Q: Can someone give me advice? im 18, wanting to buy a CHEAP RELIABLE car, say under $2000 around Springfield,IL!?

A: Thats where I live! kindof, but if you’re looking for a good reliable cheap car, then get either a monte carlo, 2000,you can find em anywhere, a ford focus, again, ANYWHERE, 1995 corolla, or up. I have an 05 cobalt ss just because it seats about 5, 5th is crushed, but still fits, reliable, has looks, fastish, and i found it for about 2 grand. Get a truck though if you want something long lasting.

A: Not gonna happen.
I recently came across one on a Chrysler dealers web site. It ws 5 years old and they wanted almost $6000 for it. Title showed it was not quite $5000 new.
It sold fairly quick .
Lots of people are lookiing for alternate transportation, so the prices are going to be higher .
A place to look is government auctions as some government entities used them for parking enforcement patrol, maintainence vehicles on university campus, etc.

Q: What should I look for when buying an old car under $2000?
Just got back from volunteering abroad. Don’t have much money left and am looking for work. I need a car that lasts me at least a year until I can afford something nicer. I’ve been looking at hatchbacks (Honda Civic etc.) and I’d prefer a manual. Can a mechanic safely predict how long the car will last (more or less). I’m worried about buying a cheap car that will break down and die within a few months. What do you suggest?

A: First, kudos on volunteering. Good choice to buy cheap rather than take a loan.

A mechanic can only give you a snapshot of the vehicle’s condition. He cannot reliably predict failures. You should still get any potential purchases checked out.

Saturns are good cars that tend to be overlooked, and there are plenty with manual transmissions (and cheap!) Top choices are Honda, Toyota, and Nissan (and the prices reflect it). You could probably get an early ’90s Buick Century/Olds Ciera for next to nothing, and they run forever (ugly, cheap and reliable). Ford Escorts from ‘92 up are pretty good.

Try online listings. Military bases have lots for deploying personnel to sell their cars and college towns always have beater cars for sale. You could even pick up a used cop car at a county auction for cheap.

Should we trade in our car (we only owe under 9000) for a bigger car and buy a cheap (under 2000) for just running to and fro. We both work, and have different schedules we need a second car, just don’t know what would make the best options.. WE also need a truck or SUV thing for those times we need to haul stuff and my husband mows lawns part time and we have to always borrow someones truck.. SO basically should we trade in our car for a truck/suv or keep our car and buy a cheap truck.. any suggestions of makes and models would help.. we have a child.. so keep that in mind

A: If you are thinking of buying a cheap truck get a toyota or a nissan. Those are good on gas.

A: Craigslist.com, Baby. Select your state/city, cars & trucks by owner, then put in your max price (I’d put in $2500 and wheel ‘em down to $2000) and press search. Poof, tons of cars in your area.

I need a really cheap car to get some driving practice and to get to school.
I’m not looking for any fancy or fast, heck I would drive a golf cart if it were
fast enough to drive on streets.

A: With the scrap price of cars running in the 600 dollar range and the cash for clunkers program last year it is down right hard to find a cheap disposable car right now.
That said, if you look at e-bay motors use the distance search method. With some luck maybe there will be something there.
Craig’s list is a great idea, but there are scams out there and those selling cars that money is still owed on. Some times you may get burned.
Another place to look is in the “free” classifieds like “Thrifty Nickel”, or what ever your area has.
Some news papers have a site that links to a local auto trader also.
Then there is always the paper.
Just don’t expect a cream puff, it will need work along the way. But a lot of times repairs are cheaper then car payments or even just the taxes on a newer car.

A: It should be 4-door, 4-cyls, not sporty. I would prefer Honda or Toyota… First time drivers usually have much more expensive car insurance, and it depends from car. You should compare insurance rates while choosing the car – for example here – carinsurance.yoll.net

A: if you want a good reliable car, get a buick century or lesabre. they all run till well over 250k miles and you can get one for about 3-4 grand. or if you really want one good on gas, get a cavalier, neon, or sunfire. they get about 30 mpg. and the buicks aren’t that bad on gas either. my century got 30 mpg.

For my boyfriend. I don’t know how his credit is. I would say fair to good.. Not bad or excellent. But what he is wanting to do is buy a cheap car (Under $2000) on a credit card (so his limit would have to be at least $2000) and then pay it off while it has an intro apr of 0% for at least 6 months! What cards should he look into applying for?
