Q: What is a good first car under $5000 to modify for a 17 year old?
Im looking for my first car, I was thinking of getting either an 02′ WRX or an 04′ RSX but I just started working and insurance+car payments all of my money would go directly into car so I wanted something cheaper. Are there any good cars besides civics and integras I can mod and come pretty fast stock under $5000. Also would a 240sx 95 on up be a good start.

A: civics and integras aren’t good cars if you want speed because both are incredible slow and look ridiculous ‘modded’. You should be able to pick up an older model 5.0 Mustang, z28 camaro, or nissan z car for under 5. Not only are these cars already reasonably fast, they can go fast for cheaper than a rice grinder. Also alot more respectable on the street.

I couldn’t find a recent one about cool cars for under 5k. Right now I am looking at 99-04 Mustang generation and the Toyota MR2. Any other ideas? Preferably coupes…

A: Acura Integra, Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, Subaru Impreza, Acura Legend, Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, Pontiac Firebird, Toyota Celica, Chevrolet Camaro, Nissan Altima, Nissan Sentra, Nissan Maxima. Depends on the year, but those are some good choices. When I bought my ‘98 Altima GXE it was only $3800. I bought my Acura Integra for $3700. Both are/were great cars. Good luck! :)

I’m a college student, so if you have any suggestions of cars that are good for college students let me know.

A: There are some good cars in this price range, but there are some really crappy ones also. Keep in mind that you don’t have to buy the first one you see, and that you should be able to get it checked out byu a mechanic before purchasing ($30-$60). Well worth the price.

Do you have cash? If not, you will not get a good car for this price range as the only sellers that will finance are in-house financing dealers. They attempt to sell their cars at a premium, and get a high financing rate to boot. Your $5000 car will end up costing what a decent $9000 car would have cost (after a few years considering maintenance/repairs, interest on the loan, and value of the car compared to the cost).

So my recommendation is if you have cash look for a Civic or Corolla from $3K-$5K. If you are financing, look for the same car but less than 10 years old and from $6Kto $9K.

A: Older Camaro or Trans-am maybe. Unless I’m just getting too old to keep up with things, anything with 100,000 miles on it should be fairly cheap. I’m guessing early to mid 1990’s you will find a vehicle in that price range. Just a guess.

A: I have a 97 accord – zero problems with the car, and I’ve had it for a couple years.

especially if you are budget conscious and looking to save money instead of wasting it on car payments, the accord is a great way to go. Pay cash for it, and get ready to drive it for years to come.

A: If you go to the Granville/Parramatta end of Parramatta road, there are smaller, cheaper car yards that have good cars every now and then. Granville used autos is a good place on the corner of Parramatta Rd and Albert Street. If i remember correctly, they have a really nice purple Mitsubishi FTO with matching purple plates for just over 5k i think. But there’s heaps of other yards near-by.

Stay away from the city end of Parramatta Rd and Auto Alley (church st) as they will want everything you have, and then some!

A: Acura Integra, Acura RSX, 240SX, Civic SI, Civic Coupe, Civic Hatchback.

These cars have much more potential than the Mitsubishi Eclipse. In my opinion, the Eclipse can’t even stand in their league.

I am looking for a car under 5000 that would be good for a new driver. I don’t know much about cars and engines and all that so I need your help. I want a reliable car preferably sporty that can run in summer and winter(snowy conditions). It’ll probably just be used for travelling around the city. I also would like a car that I can improve or soup up as I get more money. So far all i’ve been hearing is the Honda Civic, any other suggestions?

A: I would call your local credit unions and car repossession companies. You will find some selection and be able to buy way below book, therefore get more car for your money. There are a lot of good deals out there. I often am able to buy for pennies on the dollar. I bought a 2006 Toyota Highlander in 2008 for just $6000. So, believe me, the deals are there.

A: You may want to consider a Honda Civic CRX or a mid-90s Mazda Miata. I would personally be partial to the Miata in this case because of the superior nature of the RWD platform.
